The 8 classes of Carnival Cruise Line ships, explained

carnival cruise classes

Carnival Splendor was originally built and designed to sail for Carnival’s sister company Costa. Carnival Splendor was meant to be an additional ship in the Costa Concordia class but instead sailed under Carnival in a class of its own. The ship was transferred from Costa to Carnival during the construction phase. In a class all by itself, Carnival Splendor is the only ship in Carnival’s Splendor Class. You are probably wondering why there is only one cruise ship in this class, and that’s a great question. In addition, there's a top-deck ropes course on Carnival Dream and Carnival Magic.

For dinner in the main dining room, you must sign up for either Your Time dining (you go whenever you want) or Traditional Dining (you have a fixed table and time for dinner). Design-wise, Carnival's cabins and suites are fairly basic and comfortable, if not super stylish. Cabins on recently unveiled or overhauled vessels have a soothing palette of creams and blues. Cabinetry in these rooms is a crisp and clean faux wood, and cabin bathrooms are neutral. For the most part, Carnival ships sail relatively short voyages of three to eight nights.

Which Celebrity Cruise Ships Have Been Refurbished

The Mardi Gras is now the largest ship in Carnival’s fleet at 184k gross tons. The Sunshine Class in Carnival’s fleet includes three, active ships. In terms of size, the Fantasy Class of ships is smaller than the Triumph Class and larger than the Fantasy Class. The first of which introduced in 2001 is, not surprisingly, the Carnival Spirit.

Think nightly dance parties in White Heat Dance Club, movies under the stars on the pool deck, and tacos from BlueIguana Cantina. The ship sails around the Bahamas, Caribbean, and more on two to 10-day itineraries. Head to the main theater for enchanting live performances and shows every night, enjoy tacos and burgers on the pool decks, or find a lounge chair around the pool and soak up the sun.

Maybe you'll drink a little too much, eat a little too much, play a little too much — but in the end, you'll say it was your best trip ever. The overarching idea for Carnival's ship deployments is that a large percentage of the U.S. population can reach one of the line's ships by car, saving the cost of flights. Indeed, if you're going on a Carnival cruise, the odds are you're driving to the ship, not flying, and you're probably not paying much more than you would for a trip to a local beach town. A version of this chef Emeril Lagasse-affiliated spot is on each of Carnival's Excel Class ships, bearing the hull number of the original vessel for which the new one is named. Simply walk up to order at the counter, have a seat and a waiter will take over from there. Fully accessible rooms are stair-free, flat-threshold cabins, which offer wider (32-inch) doorways, turning space and bathrooms equipped with grab bars and shower seats. Excel Suites, Carnival Jubilee's highest-level accommodations, receive all standard suite perks plus additional ones. I arrived 15 minutes early for a magic show at the Punchliner Comedy Club, and I couldn't find a single available seat in the entire place.

While Conquest Class ships are slightly smaller, they have plenty to offer guests in terms of amenities. Vista Class is an excellent option if you’re looking for a more classic Carnival experience. The ships with Excel Class also have the most amenities and activities on board. Carnival cruises are renowned for their incredible onboard activities and relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere.

Done up in bright, tropical colors, these rooms offer extended outdoor lounge space and private access to the Havana Pool and Bar area. The first couple had to do with differences between the Carnival HUB app and the daily Fun Times printed schedule. On one occasion, the app said Seafood Shack opened half an hour earlier than it did, while the paper version of the daily schedule had the correct information. Another time, the printed daily had the wrong theater show listed for that night; the correct one was posted in the HUB.

They are designed to conquer the seas, offering a range of activities and entertainment options. From live shows to themed parties, the Conquest Class promises an action-packed cruise. These ships offer a unique blend of luxury and fun, ensuring every guest feels pampered. With spa cabins and gourmet dining, it’s a haven for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.

Ear-piercing shrieks reverberated throughout the space, which was also blocked off to passengers trying to pass through. Plus, the space is a bit of a throwback to the days when interior designer and architect Joe Farcus was responsible for Carnival's ship decor. The decor is midcentury modern style meets '80s quirk, featuring a pink and teal color scheme, fun light fixtures and a bar with colored mirror accents. All Carnival cruises go to great spots — what sets each ship apart is how it gets you there. Every one of our ships features its own unique twist on Carnival-style fun.

In fact, the lower tiers of the Carnival program are among the most stingy in the entire cruise universe. You'll receive things like a single complimentary bottle of water (at the Red tier) and a single free drink that only can be ordered on the last night of a cruise (at the Gold tier). During the evenings, there is an official dress code, but it's pretty laid-back. Most nights are designated "cruise casual," which means just that — khakis or jeans, polo shirts, sundresses, etc. Super casual items such as cutoff jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and gym shorts aren't permitted. During the day, there is no specific dress code, and people dress casually.

That's a noticeable difference if you're the kind of vacationer who doesn't like to be around giant crowds. For some Carnival fans, the smaller size of the Conquest class and Splendor class makes these ships appealing. Others prefer the added amenities that come with the bigger ships. The Carnival fleet is scheduled to grow over the next year with two more new vessels. As noted above, the line has ordered a third Excel-class ship (Carnival Jubilee) that will be ready to sail in December 2023.
